Abstrak

Nutritional deficiencies are highly prevalent among children under five (0–59 months), a developmental phase marked by rapid physical and cognitive growth. In Nabire Regency, Nabarua Subdistrict remains one of the areas contributing to malnutrition cases. During this critical period, children require sufficient intake of energy, protein, vitamins, and minerals to maintain optimal body function and health. Inadequate dietary patterns may lead to poor food diversity and quality, which can compromise nutritional adequacy and violate the principles of balanced nutrition. This study aimed to assess the characteristics of nutrient intake and dietary quality among children under five in the working area of Nabarua Community Health Center. The study employed a cross-sectional quantitative design involving 55 children selected through purposive sampling. Data collection was conducted using a 24-hour food recall and a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Statistical analysis using Pearson correlation revealed significant associations between energy adequacy and age (p < 0.005), as well as carbohydrate adequacy and both sex and age (p < 0.005). A significant relationship was also found between calcium adequacy and nutritional status based on weight-for-height index (p < 0.005), and between iron adequacy and both sex and weight-for-height status (p < 0.05). Other child characteristics showed no significant association with dietary adequacy or quality indicators such as the Individual Dietary Diversity Score (IDDS) and Healthy Eating Index (HEI). The findings are expected to inform public health strategies and serve as an educational tool for parents and caregivers, particularly in the Nabarua area, in improving dietary practices and preventing malnutrition in early childhood.
